Fruit of the Month: Cantaloupe (October 4)


Cantaloupe
Large, sweet and well-netted cantaloupes are grown in Texas. Texas cantaloupes including Pecos melons are known for their excellent flavor and quality. Cantaloupes can get as heavy as 5 kilograms or over 10 pounds! This delicious, yummy fruit is low in calories, cholesterol- and fat-free, and very high in great antioxidants including vitamins A and C. Catch yourself a cantaloupe on October 4!

Food Explorer of the Month: Beets (October 9)



Beets

The usually deep red roots of beetroot are eaten either grilled, boiled, or roasted as a cooked vegetable, cold as a salad after cooking and adding oil and vinegar, or raw and shredded, either alone or combined with any salad vegetable. A large proportion of the beets are canned or made into pickles.  In Indian cuisine, chopped, cooked, spiced beet is a common side dish. Eating beets provides you with tons of potassium, fiber, magnesium, iron, and vitamin A. Pile up on this vegetable can lower blood pressure and improve mental health. On October 9th be adventurous, try the Beet Pickles!

Food Explorer of the Month: Nopales (September 13)


Nopales


These delicious veggies are made from a plant you'd probably never think to bite into: a certain kind of cactus. The cactus is made edible after the spines or needles have been carefully peeled off.   It is a popular vegetable in Mexico, and it can make for a great vegetable taco. This type of cactus is high in vitamin C and antioxidants. Eating this tasty vegetable will help decrease inflammation and your risk of developing inflammation. Try Nopales on September 13, we will have taken the needles off already!

- Research has shown that students who eat school meals perform their best academically.
- Breakfast is an important meal and according to a study by the Maryland Meals for Achievement, students who eat school breakfast have greater gains in standardized test scores and show improvements in math, reading, and vocabulary scores.
- Heatlhy eating means healthy students with fewer trips to the school nurse and less absenteeism.
- For the 2012-13 school year, C-FB students ranked #7 out of more than 200 schools in academic performance!
